Why I Believe Mary Was Chosen to Be Jesus' Earthly Mother

This Christmas season, I think of the Mary of the Bible and what I can learn from her humble experience. She was no proud Madonna as the Papists would declare her. She was blessed among women as she had the privilege of giving birth to the Messiah in His humanity. Now I think of why was Mary chosen to be Jesus' earthly mother.

Isaiah 7:14 says that a virgin shall bear a Son. The Old Testament prophesies of the Messiah coming from the line of David and the Line of Judah. A simple study on the genealogy of both Mary and Joseph would give us the idea of why the Savior chose her to be His vessel and earthly mother. The lineage of Joseph (Matthew 1) and Mary (Luke 3:23-38).

Joseph's lineage was from Solomon. Mary's lineage was from Nathan. Both descended from David and Bathsheba. Joseph's lineage was under a curse because of Jeconiah (1 Chronicles 3:16, Jeremiah 22:24). Therefore, it ended the Kingdom of David but it was going to be restored one day. Legally, Joseph would serve as Jesus' foster father and Mary called Joseph as such when she addressed Jesus was missing to attend to His Father's business (Luke 2:48).

If you go back to Genesis 3:15 - the promise was that the Savior would be the Seed of a woman. Jesus was to be the Seed of a woman and the Seed of David. How could that both be fulfilled? Legally, Jesus is David's seed through Joseph and biologically in His humanity He also gets it from Mary. Mary was both a descendant of David and a virgin. Having been born of Mary fulfilled it as well. Jesus would be in His humanity a Seed of David and Seed of a woman through Mary's giving birth of Him as a child conceived by the Holy Ghost.

I even think of Mary's reaction in Luke 1:29 was that she was troubled. It must have still troubled her to think that she a sinner in need of a Savior would be the one to bring the Messiah in His human form. She knew too well that the one in her womb is the very eternal Son of God. John 1:1-12 talks about the Word. The Word is Jesus Christ. She must have thought it one way or another that she wasn't worthy that it took the angel Gabriel's reassuring words for her to accept it.

I thought of how God picks the humble and available. Mary was humble enough to see she was a sinner in need of a Savior. She was available for God's will. She couldn't believe she found favor with God. This is the power of grace. It's amazing how grace saves the worst of sinners. She was at this point a sanctified woman yet she was not yet glorified. I could imagine what must have been in her mind that she humbled herself even more by accepting the responsibility God has given to her.

At this point, I think of how Mary herself still shines as a brilliant example of not only how Christians should live but also the power of grace. She wasn't born of sinless parents and neither was she born sinless as the Papists teach. Yet the grace of God allowed her to conceive Jesus without sin. If Papists could teach that she has no sinful parents and God set her apart - there's no reason for them not to believe that a sinless Savior can be born out of Mary who was not sinless as they claimed.
