My Thoughts on "Spider" or "Lizard" in Proverbs 30:28

The translation of Proverbs 30:28 has varied from Bible to Bible. Some say lizard while others say spider. I personally prefer the word "spider" over "lizard". However, there's some interesting trivia that we might have ignored.

Did you know that there's a animal called the spider gecko? Among the many varieties are the Persian spider gecko. It's scientific name is Agamura persica. It's found in the deserts and Persia (now Iran) is part of the Middle East where Israel is. Solomon probably heard of the fascinating Persian spider gecko. The spider gecko is called as such because of its long spindly legs. It should be interesting that this variation of the spider gecko is found in the desert. I'd believe that these variety of geckos have made it into Israel even before Solomon became king.

Granted, the KJV translators spelled out semaweth as "spider" instead of "lizard". The Strong's Condordance quotes the Brow-Driver, Briggs' definition as a kind of lizard. It seems that the KJV scholars could've put italics and placed lizard in italics after the word spider. I believe the KJV is given by preservation but not by inspiration. Otherwise, the KJV scholars wouldn't have to edit seven times if they were receiving divine inspiration while translating it. Instead, the KJV scholars edited seven times because they were aware that they could've had made mistakes. Later, the KJV got revised after 1611 probably because of the updating of languages or they found newer manuscripts. I believe the KJV which I hold dear today has gone through several revisions but still remains understandable by the grace of God. 

Why I think they used "spider" back then instead of lizard or even spider lizard was probably due to the language during the 1600s. It seemed that the KJV translators preferred "spider" over "lizard" in order to show the kind of lizard there was instead of a literal spider. It's pretty much why mythological animals' names were used such as using the word "cockatrice" to describe a variety of serpent, the word "unicorn" to describe what might be a rhinoceros, the word "satyr" as a synonym for a male goat, and the word "dragon" refers to giant reptiles. You have a reptilian animal called the komodo dragon yet it's not a fire-breathing mythical dragon you have in myths and legends. Those are probably the same reasons as why "spider" is used instead of "lizard" - to show the kind of lizard over a literal spider.
