My Reflection on the Importance of the Virgin Birth

While I don't accept the Roman Catholic superstition that says that Mary was born without sin yet I believe in the importance of the virgin birth. So what's so important about the virgin birth? I would like to give time to reflect on the importance of the virgin birth.

Isaiah 7:14 has Isaiah delivering the important message to the wicked King Ahaz. The message was the following that a virgin will give birth to a child. One of my many problems with modern translations is how often virgin has been translated as woman since a woman is not necessarily a virgin. This was all part of the Old Testament promise in Genesis 3:15 when the Seed of the woman and not the woman will crush the head of Satan.

Some may ask if Mary wasn't born sinless then how can the Savior be sinless? That's a good point. This is a miracle of God's grace. The sin nature is passed from Adam and not from Eve and it's from the father and not the mother (Romans 5:12-17). The blame fell on Adam and not Eve. If you read through Matthew 1's genealogy you will see that Joseph is only Jesus' foster father not biological father. His Heavenly Father is God. Joseph only acted as a legal parent and stepfather.

Mary didn't have to be sinless to bear the sinless Savior. If Roman Catholics can believe that Mary was set aside to be born without sin from sinful parents then why can't they accept that Mary was not sinless yet she bore the sinless Savior? The Child was conceived by the Holy Spirit and the human nature of Christ is protected from original sin for that reason. Mary herself was already a fine believer in God. By today's standards she would be one fine Christian woman that every mother should model. Luke 1:47 has it where Mary declares her need for a Savior.

What makes the virgin birth of Jesus different from those found in pagan mythologies? Jesus was conceived without any sexual intercourse. God the Father is not like the chief gods who impregnated human women. Such stories like the chief Greek god Zeus impregnating the mortal woman Alcmene to produce Heracles is a story of lust. God the Father sending His only Son to be born of Mary is a story of love for mankind. Jesus Christ's human incarnation through the virgin birth was so He could fulfill God's promise in Genesis 3:15. He did it so Jesus can put on human nature yet without sin, live a perfect life as God the Son in human form and fully obey the Law so He can pay for the penalty of sins.
