My Thoughts on the Abrahamic Covenant in Genesis 12:1-3
I was thinking about studying on the subject of the Abrahamic Covenant. Just to whom is it applied? The heresy of Zionism tries to treat Israel like royalty or place certain superstitions. There are times that the late Jack T. Chick gets into Zionist superstition. I don't condone to any form of anti-Semitism but condoning to the wrongs of the Israeli government or any Jew is not right.
The King James Study Bible says the following about the Abrahamic covenant:
The King James Study Bible says the following about the Abrahamic covenant:
When God established a covenant with Abraham, it was another dramatic turning point in human history. Abraham and his heirs (the nation of Israel) received an unconditional promise. Under this covenant, God promised to make Israel a great nation, to bless the seed of Abraham, to give him a great name, to make him a blessing, to bless those who blessed him and to curse those who cursed him, to give him the promised land, and through his descendants to bless the families of the4 Earth with a Redeemer. Israel's failure in this dispensation was illustrated by their leaving thie land to settle in Egypt, and resulted in bondage there. Israel's final testing under this dispensation occurred when God attempted to draw them back to the land. But they refused Him in unbelief at Kadesh-barena (cf. Ex. 19:5).
This would be put to an extreme when we consider that we should bless Jews regardless of what they do. That would be a severe misapplication. If we decide to support any ungodly activity that Israel does then we're condoning evil. I condemn what Adolf Hitler did during Nazi Germany not because those he massacred were Jews. What Hitler did was inhumane plain and simple. Hitler was no more or less evil if he murdered a Jew or a Gentile. All kinds of murder are heinous before God's eyes. Any evil activities done by Jewish people are no less evil than what Hitler did.
Did you read that? Not all physical descendants of Abraham are children of God - Jew or Arab alike! Just remember Jesus called a lot of Jews in His day as children of the Devil in John 8:41-47.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to Him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye are of your father the Devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? 47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
They thought that they were special because of their lineage. Jesus broke it with a hard-to-believe truth that Jews or Gentiles alike need a Savior. Yes, the Jews tried to tell Jesus that they were children of Abraham. Yes, physically ever Jew is a descendant of Abraham, and every descendant of Ishmael is too. However, the rejection of Ishmael in favor of Isaac doesn't mean that a Jew is born saved and an Arab is born damned. I heard that the Jews thought the Messiah will banish the Gentiles and establish an entirely Jewish kingdom. Did they expect Jesus to do that only for Him to shatter their expectations? He ended up revealing them that if they were of Abraham then they would act like Abraham. Instead, they acted like their father the Devil. This also blasts the idea that we're all brothers and sisters and that God is our Father. Unfortunately, this idea of universal brotherhood is a distortion. We are all brothers and sisters but Satan is our father. Sounds crazy but every person lost in sin has Satan has his spiritual father. That's why there's the need to be born again from being a child of the Devil to becoming a child of God. When I mean born again it's all about receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior - not infant baptism or in baptism.
We also need to consider how Paul also described the true inheritors of the Abrahamic covenant are not the natural Jews by default but anyone in Christ:
Romans 4:9-16
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: 15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
Romans 9:6-8
6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
Galatians 3:6-9
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
The big issue is that salvation is not about Jew or Gentile. Even the Old Testament presented examples of this redemption such as Joseph's marriage to Asenath (who was a daughter of a pagan priest), Joseph's Egyptian house servant, the conversion of Zipporah and her father Jethro, Rahab when she joined the people of Israel, Ruth when a Moabite went from becoming Naomi's daughter-in-law to becoming Rahab's daughter-in-law, we realize that Boaz was half-Canaanite via his mother Rahab, Uriah the Hittite was a mighty man of David, and even Joseph being sent to Egypt was proof that even the ungodly Egyptians were not beyond God's plan of salvation.
How is the promise of becoming a child of Abraham fulfilled? It's not by natural descent. Remember the rich man who went to Hell tried to appeal to it in Luke 19:16-31. The big issue is that becoming a child of Abraham is a spiritual issue, not a genetic issue. Jews and Gentiles alike must accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior to be a beneficiary of the Abrahamic Covenant. Remember, only the redeemed in Christ will ever into the New Jerusalem. Jews who aren't saved will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire like every other lost sinner.
