I Say Gun Violence is a Problem Because of Sin

I read the news of the Las Vegas shootings. There's nothing new about it. While the Bible doesn't prohibit people from owning deadly weapons or using them for defense but it certainly prohibits their misuse. The same Bible that institutes the death penalty also prohibits it being carried out without proper due process or to be used indiscriminately. The problem isn't guns or death penalty but their improper use. These stuff were meant to help defend a country but they can destroy a country when they're in the wrong hands.

Here's an illustration of how guns isn't the issue but it's all about sin. Jesus told His disciples to buy a dagger to defend themselves in Luke 22. Moments later he tells Peter not to use the dagger or to put the law into his own hands. The issue is not about having a sword or a knife but it's all about misusing them. It's like how heroes of the Bible rightfully used the sword to defend the nation all the while wicked men of the Bible used the sword to satisfy their blood lust.

The issue is that you can have a lot of rules but it will end up useless unless sin is addressed. I appreciate the concern to arrest people who mishandle guns yet there's also the right to own weapons for self-defense. While it's wrong for the government to confiscate everyone's firearms but it's right for them to do so if they came from guilty people. Guns should only be taken away from people who won't handle them responsibly. You can have all the prohibition but the bigger problem is sin.

You have your rights to own firearms but you have your duty to responsibly own them. Remember Jesus allowed His disciples to own deadly weapons but also warned them to use them responsibly.
