My Reflection on Proverbs 31 This Mother's Day

Today is Mother's Day and I remembered one sermon by Pastor Robert Kent P. Jesalva of World in Need Baptist Church called "Bathsheba: A Mother to Model". It's really something to consider how a sermon on Bathsheba as a mother to model could fit in. Whenever someone mentions Bathsheba, who can forget the scandal in 1 Samuel 11? It's easier to remember the scandal in 1 Samuel 11 than the restoration David had in 1 Samuel 12.

This is what we could consider about Bathsheba. She and David sinned greatly yet the LORD restored them after they repented. After the child born out of adultery was dead we have another son who was named Solomon. Another of David's and Bathsheba's children was named Nathan (2 Samuel 5:14, 1 Chronicles 14:4, 2 Chronicles 9:29). After Solomon was born, David had other children with Bathsheba and he probably named one of them Nathan in honor of the prophet whom God used to bring him to repentance. It would be important to consider that Solomon's lineage led to Joseph and Nathan's lineage led to Mary. Both Joseph and Mary are descendants of David which would fulfill both legal and genetic rights to the throne. Jesus was both legally and biologically the seed of David.

So what's the role of Bathsheba? The Bible was somewhat silent about her other than her backsliding, adultery and her role as queen mother. But let's take a look at Proverbs 31. Many scholars have agreed that Lemuel is actually another name for Solomon. Lemuel was probably a nickname that Solomon used or it was another name he was known for. Abigail's son with David named Chileab was also known as Daniel (1 Chronicles 3:1). Bathsheba was told that Solomon would be the next king after David. Bathsheba's repentance resulted to her giving wise advice to her son who would be king. She told Solomon of finding the right woman. What was so sad that after Solomon's romance with the Shullamite woman where he was the shepherd-lover and king (he also owned flocks of sheep) he soon became an old pervert. Solomon would later regret such horrible backsliding in Ecclesiastes. He must have reread Psalm 51 while he wrote Ecclesiastes where he repented of his foolishness.

After reading on Proverbs 31 it's also very important to remember that no Christian should marry a non-Christian. Amos 3:3 says that the two can't walk together except they be agreed. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says that no one should be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Christians can't evangelize by breaking God's law of not marrying unbelievers. Every Christian mother must make sure that their children are not equally yoked with unbelievers as part of good parenting.
